Everything you need to know before joining the network.

    VATSIM Network

What is VATSIM and what does it mean to be a virtual pilot?

VATSIM is a global non-profit organization where registration and connection are completely free. It allows virtual pilots to connect via their Flight Simulator and fly together in a shared virtual airspace, while virtual Air Traffic Controllers provide realistic radar coverage.

The network dynamically updates so you can see all other aircraft operating around you under real-world weather conditions. If an area is staffed by a controller, communication is handled via voice over the radio frequency, or text if needed, using real radiotelephony rules.

When flying through uncontrolled airspace, pilots safely coordinate their positions and flight paths independently using the common Unicom frequency 122.800. You can also join Virtual Airlines or aeroclubs that simulate real-world fleet logistics, pilot ranks, and complex operations.

    Pilot Preparation

How to become a virtual pilot?

First and foremost, you must review and comply with the core VATSIM network Code of Conduct. Everyone joins this global community with the same shared goal: to enjoy an immersive, high-fidelity aviation experience.

Before making your first connection, take some time to learn basic flight rules, fundamental navigation techniques, and introductory radio phrases. Everyone starts as a beginner, so preparation and willingness to learn are the most important first steps.

Ultimately, you should have a minimal baseline control over your aircraft. This means you can comfortably hold altitude, safely navigate, maintain target speeds, and handle basic takeoffs and landings without interrupting the realism of your fellow pilots and controllers.

    Required Setup

What do I need as a virtual pilot?

To get started on the network, make sure you have the following ready:

    • A PC with a flight simulator installed, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, Prepar3D, or X-Plane.
    • A compatible pilot connection client software, such as vPilot or xPilot.
    • A headset or a microphone and working speakers.
    • A stable internet connection.
    • An active email address for official registration.
    • A positive mood and a passion for learning.
    Registration

How do I register and join the network?

To gain flight privileges, you must first create an official account on VATSIM. Ensure you use your authentic, real-world data, as placeholder names can lead to administrative account lockouts.

Once your VATSIM ID (CID) is generated, you are to go.

    Critical Step During Registration

If Greece is your home country, when creating your account here, make sure to select:
Preferred Region: Europe  |  Preferred Division: Europe except UK  |  vACC: Hellenic vACC
